A Note About Materials & Equipment
Please note that no specialised equipment is required before the first session.
The Sewing Machine Lab welcomes participants with or without previous experience using a sewing machine.
To begin the workshop, a domestic or industrial sewing machine, a small collection of papers, several machine needles and basic sewing threads are sufficient.
Rather than asking participants to purchase specialised materials in advance, we begin working with what is already available. Throughout the workshop we gradually introduce additional tools and materials only when they become relevant to the exercises. As your own practice develops, you will naturally discover which materials best support your way of working.
The live sessions are designed as focused learning environments built around demonstrations, presentations, artistic references, discussion and questions. Because the workshop content is intentionally rich and concentrated, there is generally not enough time to carry out extensive practical experiments during the sessions themselves.
Participants are encouraged to continue experimenting between sessions. This creates time for observation, comparison, testing different papers, threads, needles and machine settings while gradually developing a personal reference library throughout the workshop.
